For new applications there is usually the need to test the membrane on the process fluid. The testing program is often a two-step process. Step 1 is often termed a “feasibility” test and is useful to generate samples for lab analysis to ensure the proper separation is achieved. In addition, Step 1 also provides single-point flux and cleaning data to allow a budgetary estimate of the full-scale system size and economics. This feasibility test is designed to minimize time and expense for all parties to confirm if the technology is appropriate and economic enough to consider additional testing.
If the feasibility results are positive, you generally would move to Step 2 of testing to collect scalable data to optimize the membrane system design, economics, and integration into the balance of the process. In general, you want to now test with additional membrane area on the same feed stream as full scale and under the same process conditions, as much as possible. Testing can last from one to three months or more, depending on factors such as process complexity, data repeatability, and your level of comfort.
